Techno-Redwork…

Now that I have my shiny new Janome embroidery machine, the stitching and stitching and stitching is under way. After a lot of experimentation the first of the QR codes for the Library quilt is completed and I absolutely love it. It turned out just as I had hoped, or possibly even better. Nothing like transforming a bit of digital ephemera into 50,000 stitches…

I think I am going to be a big embroidery junky. Each of the QR codes will finish out at just over eight-inches square, so there are going to be a lot of stitches on this quilt…

Speaking of the quilt, I’ve finally decided on the overall design; I’ve fiddled around a bit and come up with this variation on an Irish Chain. I love how dropping that one square where the diagonals would meet up just leaves a little gap for the embroideries to speak to each other (or at least symbolically). I’m sure this quilt has been done a million times, and probably has a name, so if you know what it is please let me know…

Still not sure about the border, but for now I like it…

And the super awesome thing is that the embroidered QR code still works. Just take the pic of the full embroidery and try it here. See? Effing awesome, right???

Anyway, now on to the next book; there are 17 more to go. Next up is a collection of Langston Hughes’ poetry. Not sure which one yet, but I’ll figure that out soon. Hughes’ poetry is perfect for children as they grow into adulthood; his language and metaphors are accessible, but there is so much there to grow into. And as I assemble this library it is important that it lead to a resonant appreciation of the extraordinary power and possibility in words.

So, keep tuned. There is so much more to come…
