Sew, Mama, Sew (the Modern Quilt Perspectives blog tour)…

(Go now to the Sew, Mama, Sew stop on the blog tour for our discussion of the word meaningful in Modern Quilt Perspectives. And of course they are giving away a copy of the book as well. Go…))

thomas-knauer-sews-sms-1Sew, Mama, Sew is where I first started writing around here, besides on my blog that is. It was way back when (like two years ago) and after a particularly odd Quilt Market I asked Kristin about writing a series called Sew, Papa, Sew that looked at gender norms and how prevalent they are here in the quilting world. I wanted to look at sewing, and the quilting community, through the lens of teaching my daughter about quilting. And I wanted to write about how very much I feel outside of this community at times.

thomas-knauer-sews-sms-2I am so grateful to Kristin for giving me the chance to write those pieces, to explore some of the things that I have observed, most especially how gender tropes, those stereotypical expectations of guys and ladies, are so readily used in the quilting world. And even more than that I have to thank everyone at SMS for giving me that first chance to write for a wider audience. After that series I ended up writing for Stitch, Craft, Create until it was (sadly) closed down, and then begin writing for Quilter’s Newsletter. And of course there is the book. But, Kristin and SMS were the first to give me a platform, a chance to grow.

And so it seems fitting that Sew, Mama, Sew is a part of the blog tour; it is kind of where this all started. It is also fitting that today’s post on SMS grew out of a conversation that Kristin and I had about the word meaningful, and how it is used in Modern Quilt Perspectives (not going to give it away here; you have to head over to the SMS post to read that). And of course it only makes sense that I had a hand in writing the post, because that just seems to be what I do: I write…

And of course I will be forever grateful to Sew, Mama, Sew for again and again allowing me to share my words. Thank you all for everything, and thank you for taking part in the blog tour. Much love…
