Awesome People: Sara Lawson…

It’s been a while since I’ve done an awesome people are awesome post, but the past week has really kicked that need into high gear. Whatever frustrations I may have with the larger universe, I truly am lucky to know and work with some extraordinary people and makers. For a while now I’ve had the privilege to work with the amazing Sara Lawson. Heck, it feels like I’ve been doing stuff with her forever, even though we’ve only known each other for about a year.

You may have guessed from the general vibe of my writings and headspace that I don’t make friends easily: I am a strange mix of gregarious and shy (I’m just a bucketful of contradictions). Despite that Sara is one of the people in this world I consider to be an essential friend; the fact that we get to work on stuff together is just a big helping of awesome sauce on top.

Even further, she has quickly become part of my brain trust, that small group of people I bounce sketches and ideas off of. Not only is Sara one of the hardest workers I have ever met in the creative world, she also has an extraordinary eye. The way she approaches fabric is much like a stone carver; I can sense her looking deep within the fabric to find the forms and scales that it wants to become, pairing fabrics to design in extraordinary ways. Because of the combination of labor and thought and insight that Sara brings to this world it should come as no surprise that she is making waves, and I am pretty darn sure she is going to be a major player for years to come.

What strikes me the most about Sara is her willingness, almost eagerness, to completely change things. If I had a nickel for every time I heard about Sara starting off intending one thing but ending up in another direction because something in the design, fabric, or aether demanded a new approach I would have a lot of nickels. Trust me, cultivating that willingness is hard to do, but Sara truly has the re-evaluation gene, or whatever, and that is one of the rarest of commodities in the creative world, and leads her to endlessly make profoundly smart and wonderful work.

Luckily for us Sara is making her work more and more accessible; she has launched an array of patterns over the past couple of months, including the fabulous Aeroplane Bag. She just made a couple more of these in my next collection—Thesaurus. She seriously knows how to make my fabrics sing.

You can buy all of her patterns at her shop, which you really ought to go do. Seriously. I am not a bag maker—dimensional sewing is the bane of my existence—but I have it on the highest of authority that Sara’s patterns are exquisite. And on top of that, Sara is coming out with her first book this October with Martigale: Big City Bags. Keep your eye out for it; it is going to be a must have. I promise, and I don’t make promises lightly…

Anyway, if you don’t know Sara, you really ought, at least digitally. Go read her blog and keep track of what she’s up to. Find her at Market and tell her just how awesome she is. Trust me, not only is she one of the kindest and most wonderful people you could know, she is one of the smartest makers I have met in a long time. I am indeed very, very lucky…
